Meet the Musicians

Listen up! It’s time to meet the Vogue Charity Fashion Show 2021/2022 musicians.

Music can make us feel all the feels - excitement, happiness, sadness, romance, suspense. It takes the simple and turns it into something magical. The 2021/2022 music portfolio brings this magic touch to every scene creating a harmonious balance between dancers, models, and of course, fashion. It is up to the musicians to ensure a mellifluous flow from scene to scene, all while remaining in tune with our overarching theme: Artem Terrae

With such a crucial role in our show, we figured it was time you meet the people behind the sound of VCFS. This year, musician auditions were held virtually, but that didn’t stop Head of Music, Sophia Lapier, from putting together a truly melodious team:

“The VCFS musicians this year display an incredible range of talent, and each and every one of them brings something unique to the table. They’ve certainly proved that they can overcome any obstacles that may arise and can collaborate with new people to produce some pretty impressive sounds. Rehearsals have been going well so far, and their hard work definitely shows! I am so grateful to be working amongst such a kind-hearted, creative, and fun group of people this year, and I can’t wait for everyone to see all that these musicians have to offer!” - Sophia LaPier

The 2021/2022 fashion show includes seven scenes under the theme Artem Terrae. Each scene emphasizes the importance of the natural world around us, how the earth sustains us, and how in turn we must work to sustain the earth. The music portfolio has developed playlists to match the different vibe and feel of each scene. Check them out below, or visit our Spotify (@vcfs_queens) for the complete sound of VCFS.

Katie Goddard

Scene: Memoria

How do you connect with your scene?

“I really love the concept of using self reflection and creating something vibrant through personal growth and development. I think that using nostalgia and past experience as a tool for future success and happiness is one of the most valuable skills we can teach ourselves. MEMORIA expresses the difficult yet rewarding concept of being open to change, and gaining pertinent knowledge from personal rumination.”

What is your favourite sport to watch and/or play?

I really enjoy both playing and watching rugby! I began playing in 10th grade and it provided me with so many important lessons and connections. My favourite team is probably the New Zealand All Blacks. I also grew up ski racing, and really enjoy watching the FIS World Cup in the winter!

Emma Harris

Scene: Progressio

How do you connect with your scene?

I think the scene Progressio / Development is a scene that many can connect with, as we  all have experienced periods of burnout and have felt uninspired. In these moments, we can look into ourselves and reflect on our thoughts and doubts, and reorient our perceptions to appreciate learning opportunities and personal growth. Through this exciting process of self-development, we can realize that we are always enough and worthy, even more so when we accept that we do not know everything, that we are allowed to make mistakes so long as we learn from them, and that we are not perfect - we are human after all.

What was the best concert you ever attended and why?

When I was 7 years old, I attended a KISS concert with my family for my birthday. It was definitely one of my favourite concerts of all time, because my grandma designed and created a homemade Gene Simmons' "The Demon" costume - with wings, spikes, and everything! My dad did the classic face paint and gave me a blow-up guitar too. I loved it so much. I remember when we were at the venue, lots of concert-goers wanted to take pictures with me but I was too scared to take pictures with strangers at the time. According to my dad, I would have been featured on some famous fan account and perhaps the official KISS account/website if I had agreed to take the photos! A missed opportunity on my part, but still an amazing concert to attend.

Emily Verheyn

Scene: Imperium

How do you connect with your scene?

I feel like imperium/water is just all about going with the flow, letting things go, and moving on. Personally, I struggle a lot with letting go of things, but I do try; I try so hard to just let the waves flow. With our song “Water Under the Bridge” by Adele I feel like it allows for the opportunity to think of what is not “water under the bridge” and what should be. The song just provides a great message.

Who’s your go-to band or artist when you can’t decide on something to listen to?

Definitely Adele. I’m obsessed with R&B style music, especially her work. I just love the emotion that comes with these types of songs. I feel as though my voice really suits this style and getting to put in your own emotion to an already emotional song is just amazing.

Sophia LaPier

Scene: Imperium

How do you connect with your scene?

I connect with my scene because I think it's completely true that life ebbs and flows. Like water, sometimes life come at us hard, while other times it's ok to let go, to go with the flow, and let things run its course. I love the connection to nature this year and I can't wait for everyone to see the show!

If you were pushed into a dance circle, what would be your go-to move?

“Oh, my go-to dance move would definitely be the worm. I had to learn it when I was 8 for a jazz dance that I was in and I've never looked back. I've got to say, it is quite the crowd-pleaser! :P”

Kabir Walia

Scene: Viribus

How do you connect with your scene?

VIRIBUS represents both triumph and downfall: two sides of the same coin. Successes and failures are paramount to the human experience, and for that reason I believe that I, as well as so many others, connect with VIRIBUS.

What could you give a 40 minute presentation on with absolutely no preparation?

“Ariana Grande's discography to date and entire life story (yes, I know the names of each and every one of her dogs).”

Laura Carson

Scene: Libertas

How do you connect with your scene?

“I connect with Libertas through my deep rooted passion for the outdoors. As an avid canoe tripper and camper, I know the importance of being surrounded by nature. The opportunity to connect that side of me to music is so lovely.”

Go-to coffee/tea order?

“Dark roast with a hazelnut shot and 1 cream.”

Emma Mackinnon

Logan Cohen

How do you connect with your scene?

“I feel that I have a strong connection to Libertas. I am always looking for ways I can grow as a person and make positive changes in my life whether they be big or small. I am also constantly practicing self reflection as a part of my journey to not only grow but to help achieve my personal goals.”

If you could live anywhere, where would it be?

“If I could live anywhere it would definitely be New York City. It’s my favourite place in the world, there’s such great culture, it’s always busy and fun, and it holds a very special place in my heart! I hope to move there someday!”

Hannah Shacklock

Scene: Sustineri

How do you connect with your scene?

“I connect with my scene by recognizing the importance of sustainability especially in society today. I’m so happy to have a small part in being involved in such an important message and being able to do it with so many musicians.”

What is your favourite book?

“My favourite book is "the Outsiders". I read this book at least 3 times a year and I find it never gets old or loses its message.”

Danton Delchuk

Scene: Libertas

How do you connect with your scene?

“Being in and around nature is really important to me, it is where I find a lot of peace and inspiration. Libertas is all about the forest vibes so we definitely align.”

Where is the first place you want to travel to after the pandemic?

“Japan! I learned to speak Japanese as a kid and have never been! Forgotten most of it, though still have to visit!”

Arinze Imasogie

Scene: Salvos

How do you connect with your scene?

“The SALVOS scene is refreshing because it reminds us that life can be vicious, yet beautiful at the same time. The jungle is a place with vibrant colours and luscious landscapes, wherein animals constantly fight for survival.”

What is something you think everyone should do once in your lives?

“I think that everyone should try playing an instrument at least once in their lives, because it gives you a much greater appreciation for the music that you like. Regardless of the style you prefer, having attempted to play that music will give you an enhanced listening experience.”

Emma Wensley

Scene: Salvos

How do you connect with your scene?

I believe a band is its own exciting ecosystem; an ensemble of various musicians that each have their own important role to play in a performance. It’s exciting and makes a statement, which defines this opening scene.

What’s your favourite hobby?

Going back to Samoa to see my family. It's always a fun time to be surrounded by so many relatives and visiting the beaches and swimming holes around the island.

Daniel Degange

Scene: Salvos

How do you connect with your scene?

I think that this scene fits our band (MINT) because we all bring our own unique talents, outlooks, and style to the table to produce our sound. Our differences are what balance our sound and separate us from the rest, and I feel like that’s what salvos is all about.

What concert would you want to see front row?

Currently, the concert(s) that I would want to be front row at would be Still Woozy or Baby Keem. I have been listening to these artists nonstop lately, And I feel like both would put on a great show!

Laura Gillis

Scene: Memoria

How do you connect with your scene?

My most precious time is spent reading, writing, and reflecting in nature. Memoria represents the most beautiful moments in my life.

Go-to coffee or tea order?

Iced matcha latte with oat milk and either lavender or peppermint syrup!! My friends refer to it as my “dirt drink” 🌱.
