CALLING ALL MUSICIANS!

We’re excited to announce that we are looking for our 2020/2021 musicians! Our Head of Music, Amanda Rankin, is now accepting applications to be apart of this years music portfolio! In the coming week, we will welcome a number of musicians to our family and will have finally hired all our performers for the year!

Nothing slows VCFS. In spite of the adjustments that we’ve had to make due to COVID19, this year’s performance will be a reflection of VCFS’ tenacity and impenetrable dedication to our kingston community, and art.

A message from our Head of Music, Amanda Rankin:

“For this years music portfolio I hope to create an exploratory space for musicians to learn and grow as artists. With the challenges this year faces, it also allows opportunity for the music portfolio to truly reshape and reimagine what it is like to be a vogue performer. This is a call for all musicians of any skill level, instrument, style, or musical background to submit work which shapes them as a performer.

For this years “audition,” we ask musicians to submit a recording of a song from any upcoming VCFS scene that they think embodies the energy of the scene! I hope to find a group of musicians with diverse talents and skills. String musicians are encouraged to apply, those who sing in different languages are encouraged to apply - you name it! I deeply look forward to seeing how our applicants embody the scenes of Convergence, and good luck to all!”

In order to shed some light on what it means to be a musician for VCFS, some former musicians have returned with a brief memoir about their experiences on our team:

Megan Mikhail // Head of Music 2020/ Singer

“Being a musician in VCFS was the most rewarding performance experience I’ve ever had. It is such a unique opportunity to collaborate with amazing musicians and creatives, and contribute to the Kingston community at the same time. VCFS let me push myself out of my comfort zone and develop my musical performance ability in a way I never thought I could, all while making incredible friends and being a part of an amazing creative community.”

Devon Cole // Singer/Musician

“Being a part of VCFS made my time at Queen’s so special. The whole production is BEYOND amazing, and watching it all come together is so rewarding. Plus, the people in Vogue are some of the most creative, passionate, motivated, inspiring, and fashionable people I know!”

Sandra Yaacoub // Singer/Musician

“As someone who hasn't been involved in charitable work in the past, being able to grow as a musician through the VCFS community, while contributing to the local community at the same time, has been of the most rewarding things I've done in my time at Queen's. I got to meet and learn from all sorts of amazing people that I wouldn't have met otherwise outside of the show. If you're a singer or musician of any kind, being a part of VCFS is definitely a rewarding way to give back to the local community and build on your own experiences! Win win!”

Emma Harris // Singer

“When I first found out that I would be performing in Vogue, I didn’t know exactly what it would entail. Although uncertain at first, slowly I began to learn that Vogue is a community, it provides a place where individuals can come together and share their passion for music, art, design, and expression - this became evident in the weeks leading up to and during show week. I found myself surrounded by a group of amazingly talented individuals, as well as hard-working and passionate exec, who all came together to create the show (whether they were on the stage or behind the scenes). I am so glad I auditioned and was given the opportunity to perform in Vogue, because it truly rekindled my love of music, art and performing. I would highly recommend taking part in Vogue as a musician, as it truly is an unforgettable experience!”

We at VCFS strongly believe in community. We also believe in establishing an inclusive environment that is a safe place for all, at all times. Though we intend to uphold the VCFS values, we also come to you this year, promising new ones. In addition to supporting Almost Home as our chosen charity, VCFS recognizes the significance of the issues brought to light by recent attention on the Black Lives Matter movement. Specifically, the importance of continuously advocating for and working towards justice with marginalized communities, especially Queer, Trans, Black, Indigenous and people of colour. As the groups that face the most oppression within society, these individuals tend to be in most need of services like those that Almost Home provides. Disparities within accessibility to healthcare and shelter for QTBIPOC are greatly heightened due to their identities, which is why the work of this charity is so necessary. We will be working with Almost Home to support initiatives that focus on QTBIPOC specifically within their organization. Additionally, we are also committing to supporting QTBIPOC within our own organization, the Queen’s community, and Kingston at large. We promise that our support will be unwavering and look forward to being held accountable for this.

We hope you consider joining our team because special things lie ahead!
