Now Hiring: VCFS Models

You follow the IG models. You’ve tried on multiple outfits and posed in front of your mirror. You might have even tuned in to watch New York Fashion Week. Now all that’s left is for you to take your fashion fantasies to the runway, and VCFS can make it happen. We are currently hiring models for the 2021/2022 year! With no experience required and a virtual audition process, it has never been easier to become a model for Canada’s largest student run fashion show.

Although auditions will be held virtually this year, Head of Model, Michelle Blaho-Melo, is confident in an in-person fashion show for VCFS.  But, for now, those interested in applying to be a model for the 2021/2022 show are to submit a self filmed audition tape. We spoke to Michelle to get a better idea of how model auditions will be working this year, as well as some insider tips for a successful audition!

But what do I do?

“The auditions will mimic how we would run things if they were in person” Michelle says. Applicants will film a video of themselves performing as if on a catwalk. No intense editing or special outfits required, the self-tape audition process is designed to be simple and accessible to everyone. After selecting one of the provided audition songs, applicants will walk in a T-formation, holding poses for a certain set of counts. For specific model audition tape instructions, visit the VCFS Hiring page or click here. After video submissions, successful applicants will be contacted for a Zoom interview to share more about themselves, and finalize the selection process.

But what do I wear?

In this audition, the dress code is simple. We want you and your personality as a model to take center stage. Those auditioning should wear a black shirt and blue fitted jeans. Just like a typical model audition, minimal makeup and jewelry is preferred. As far as footwear, heels are encouraged but not required. Wear what makes you comfortable and showcases your model walk to the best of your ability.

If you’re still feeling intimidated by the virtual audition process, here are our top self-tape tips:

  1. Don’t overthink it - be yourself. We want to see models who can bring their own personality to the catwalk.

  2. Get started early. You never know what technical difficulties you could run into, so get your submissions filmed ASAP!

  3. Lacking runway space? Get creative! Parking lots, backyards, or open park spaces are great locations to shoot your audition.

  4. Find your light. When filming your self-tape, consider the lighting of the space you’re using. Again, wide outdoor spaces are a great option as natural light looks good on everyone!

  5. Confidence and comfortability are key. We are seeking individuals who are clearly confident and comfortable in themselves and aren't afraid of being onstage.

So what is VCFS looking for in models this year? Well here’s what Michelle had to say:

“We’re looking for people who have a desire to pursue this as a collective art. That’s it in essence, we want people who are in it for the charity, the fun, the artistic creativity. It’s a chance to try something new. We’re not looking for a certain look or person. We are primarily looking for people who want it, who can own it, and who can put on a great show”.
